Follow the source audit in docs/LEGACY_M7_AUDIT.md and issue #75 comment: using an active non-Following Linking or Descriptive Book in hand leaves that book in the origin world, and automatic Return Links are disabled by default for new configs.
Acceptance criteria
On successful hand-held travel, remove only the exact active book and leave a visible, recoverable book at the origin. Failed travel must keep the book; stand/receptacle/portal use must not duplicate or drop it.
Preserve Legacy Following behavior when supported; otherwise state the unsupported boundary explicitly before enabling that modifier.
Do not substitute vanilla item five-minute despawn for Legacy EntityLinkbook: source marks it non-despawning and applies slow damage every 10,000 ticks plus wet damage. Choose a bounded modern equivalent and document any deviation.
Make descriptive_books.return_link_mode default to DISABLED for new server configs, retaining ON_CREATION and ALWAYS as opt-ins. Preserve explicit values in existing configs.
Test survival, creative, multiplayer, hand/stand/portal paths, full restart, and failed destinations; prevent book loss/duplication.
Depends on #75 audit. Coordinate with #77–#78 portal behavior.

Implemented in commit d0af752 and release V0.6.6.6. Handheld travel leaves a model-rendered, recoverable book at the origin; rejected travel preserves it, and stand/portal paths do not drop one. Following remains unsupported. Return Links were already defaulted to DISABLED in V0.6.6.1. The pickup-render crash and page orientation were corrected before release. All 74 required GameTests passed, and the user confirmed the final orientation in-game. The release jar and SHA-256 are attached to the release.
